Barbara Myers

Seated Outline

Barbara Myers' work relates to ideas of openness, communication and personal development. These themes are reflected in all her sculpture and paintings and particularly relate to her signature life-size figures in outline form , where they are seen to be in communication with each other in order to become complete.

Barbara‚Äôs outlines are left intentionally unexplained.  The voids contained within her sweeping, elegant bronze curves are therefore filled with the interpretation of the viewer.  A vast amount of time is spent by the artist fine-tuning the subtle details; the sweep of a shoulder, the angle of the head, the relationships between outlined figures in her groupings.  This focus on these detail gives her pieces enormous personality and depth, nuance that seems at odds with the simplicity of the figure.

For the 2016 Chelsea Flowers Show we sourced several outline forms by Barbara for the Chelsea Barracks Garden designed by Jo Thompson, having been invited to curate a trail it felt rather appropriate to show this piece.  The chestnut bronze patina also seemed an excellent pairing with the intricate metalwork of the surrounding balconies.
