Dreaming Spires by Tom Faulkner

Dreaming Spires by Tom Faulkner

This will be the first and largest exhibition of a mixed body of Tom's work (indoor and outdoor fusion pieces) ever, and will be the debut of his new Wave sculptural bench design. It will also be the first time the much-loved Lily design will be shown in its new outdoor iteration.

This installation spotlights timeless design and enduring craftsmanship, with clean lines and distinctive silhouettes consisting of Arizona Needles and interactive seating thoughtfully placed throughout the development.

Arizona Needles

The seven Arizona Needles are crafted in different sizes, made in stainless steel and finished in a rich midnight blue. Originally inspired by Tom’s interest in geometric forms, the Arizona Needle is made of a series of tetrahedrons which contract and expand as they rise, twisted and balanced on top of one another. Mulberry Square hosts five of the Arizona needles, positioned between the planting and rising as high as three metres. The sharp design and tapering edges encourage visitors to walk around the sculptures as the shape appears to shift and change, forming a natural dialogue between the beautiful greenery and soft movement of the planting and the surrounding elegant architecture of the development.

Garrison Square features two further Arizona Needles. Thoughtfully placed next to The Garrison Chapel, the iconic, red-bricked landmark provides a striking canvas against the captivating deep blue and polished stainless-steel edges of the Needles.

Wave Benches

The sculptural theme continues with four of Faulkner’s new Wave Benches in Garrison Square, positioned between large trees and planters to create shade and movement, and made in satin polished stainless steel. Their dramatic, playful curves and reflective surfaces invite interaction, contemplation and an ideal space for children to play. Also featured are four Lily stools, a signature Faulkner design celebrated for its organic, distinctive silhouette, and four Lily planters that, together with the benches, support the striking presence of the Arizona Needles, whilst offering a functional and grounding presence. Faulkner’s pieces blur the line between art and design and weave captivating pieces across the development, reflecting Chelsea Barracks’ celebration of materiality, craft and bespoke design.

opening quotes closing quotes I wanted these sculptural pieces to fit in with their surroundings and stand out at the same time, their own geometry echoes the clean and crisp surrounding architecture of Chelsea Barracks. For example, the Arizona Needles have been thoughtfully positioned to emerge out of the planting like striking geometric trees, and as a group, along with the church of St Barnabas’s in the distance, they have formed their very own collection of dreaming spires.
