This spring, the Garrison Chapel at Chelsea Barracks hosts two opera events presented by Opera Prelude, bringing live classical performance into one of the site’s most distinctive architectural spaces.
Founded more than fifteen years ago, Opera Prelude supports emerging opera singers while introducing audiences to the immediacy of live performance. Through concerts, recitals and masterclasses, the organisation provides professional development, mentoring and wellbeing support for young artists beginning their careers.
The two upcoming events reflect this mission: a recital exploring some of opera’s most recognisable character roles, and a masterclass led by an internationally acclaimed tenor.
Soubrettes Saving the Day
Wednesday 25 March | 11 am - 1 pm
Soprano Ceferina Penny presents a recital exploring the “soubrette”, one of opera’s most engaging character types.
Often witty and perceptive, soubrettes frequently influence the direction of many well-known operas despite appearing in supporting roles. Through a selection of arias and commentary, the recital introduces audiences to characters such as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro and Musetta in La Bohème.
The performance offers an accessible introduction for audiences new to opera while providing those already familiar with the repertoire an opportunity to explore these characters from a fresh perspective.
Masterclass with Nicky Spence OBE
Wednesday 29 April | 11 am - 1 pm
Internationally acclaimed tenor Nicky Spence OBE will lead a live masterclass with three Opera Prelude young artists.
Recognised for his expressive performances and distinctive vocal tone, Spence will guide the singers through repertoire, interpretation and vocal technique. The session offers audiences the opportunity to observe the rehearsal process and gain insight into the process behind operatic performance.
Presented within the calm architectural setting of the Garrison Chapel, the masterclass provides a rare view of how emerging artists refine their skills under the guidance of an experienced performer.
