The tailor first opened their doors in 1806 by James Poole before Henry Poole took over until 1876. After his death, ownership was succeeded by Poole’s cousin Samuel Cundey. Five generations later. Henry Poole & Co remains owned by the Cundey family. Since opening, the tailor has provided made-to-measure suits for a wide ranging list of illustrious personalities, including Napoleon III and Chelsea resident Charles Dickens.
In 1860, Henry Poole produced a smoking jacket for the Prince of Wales, intended for casual gatherings at Sandringham. On the invitation of the Prince, James Potter of Tuxedo Park visited Sandringham where he was informed by the Prince that his tailor Henry Poole could fashion him a similar jacket.
Upon their return to New York, Potter debuted the new jacket at the Tuxedo Club, prompting fellow members to commission replicas to be worn during the club’s “stag” dinners. Thus the dinner jacket or “Tuxedo” came to be.
